So I'd put the two-year-old to bed and caved on the four-and almost-six-year's request to watch a recorded show. We assumed our positions on the couch, and when I turned the TV on, Obama's Address to Congress was in progress. In spite of the kids' protests, I convinced them that it was more important to watch Obama instead of a Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends that they'd seen half a dozen times.
The four-year-old disappeared over the back of the couch, declaring that she was going to get a book. I didn't think anything of it; there are plenty of kids' books floating around on the bookshelves behind the couch.
She returned and settled in with her book. It was a 2-inch-thick paperback in her hands, cracked halfway open. It was Michener's Carribbean.
"Isn't that a little heavy for a four-year-old?" I smiled, realizing that I should probably just keep my mouth shut. She shrugged and disappeared again.
She returned with The Invisible Man.
